Drone Testing: Support for Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (SUAS)

Our principal engineer supported the RTI Group in pushing the 14 CFR 107 integration limits of small unmanned aircraft systems into the national airspace to support their non-governmental media customer. 

We leveraged our extensive 14 CFR 21 aircraft certification experience to provide the relevant regulatory acceptance rationale to the operations risk assessment (ORA) and concept of operations (CONOPs) that, coupled with the hazard likelihood and consequence determinations performed by the RTI Group, provided the necessary operational risk management to support their customer’s needs to push the drone flight boundaries to provide innovative means of delivering information to the media customer’s target audience. The net effect of our involvement was the regulatory support guidance that supported the means for the media customer to be the first organization to get a Part 107 waiver for flight over people for “closed-set motion picture and television filming” in 2017.
